In collaboration with the Finnish company the Upright Project, we used AI to determine the net impact score of Vapaus, and we are proud to announce that we are on the right path. We received the excellent AA rating, which means our current operations result in a significantly more positive than negative impact around us.

Business that does good for the world

Since the founding of Vapaus, we have been coming back to the questions of how we can be both a profitable and responsible operator, and how we can measure our success in these areas. Very early on, we decided that we want to do business in a way that does more good than bad in the world. To put it simply, we wanted to be a sustainable company.

The term sustainability is often used to discuss how a company operates – what standards, practices and recommended operating modes it observes. Sometimes, this is nothing but greenwashing – an attempt to associate the company’s operations with high morals and environmental consciousness without making any significant changes to business activities, or even having any aspirations in that direction.

We were determined not to be satisfied with such a superficial approach. We wanted to grow into a company that makes a genuine impact. From the very beginning, we’ve let our values guide how we go about expanding our business activities, and as a result, Vapaus has been a carbon-negative operator since it was founded. This is a principle we have held onto, even in the most difficult of situations.

We believe that those who have the ability to help solve humanity’s problems and change the world for the better have the responsibility to do so. We wanted to measure our current net impact on the world so we could identify new ways to develop our business activities and become even more sustainable in the process. We wanted to have a larger positive impact on the world and to discover even better ways of solving the challenges and problems of getting around.

AI analysis: the net impact score of Vapaus is +58%

The benefit bike craze has clearly profiled us as a bicycle company, and bicycle companies generally have quite an easy time being sustainable because the entire sector is already on the side of the ‘good guys’. So, how can we measure profitability and sustainability in a way that lets us see how well we’re doing?

The profitability of the company can still be measured traditionally in terms of money (in simplified terms, by net operating profit) or it can be measured in a number of other ways, such as through net impact.

In collaboration with the Finnish company the Upright Project, we used AI to determine the net impact score of Vapaus, and the result we got was +58%.

We’re proud to announce that we’re on the right path and have received the excellent AA rating, which means our current operations result in a significantly more positive than negative impact around us.

Understanding the big picture of our business activities pushes Vapaus towards more fact-based decision-making

Upright’s analysis includes the effects of business activities on the environment, health, society and knowledge. According to the profile calculated for Vapaus, our net impact rating is 87% higher than all companies globally, almost 86% higher than other Finnish companies and 96.6% higher than other companies within the transport industry.

Net impact score measures the most significant positive and negative effects of a company’s core operations and compares them against each other. Effectively, what resources do we use and what do we achieve with them?

Now that we have the overall picture of what kind of impact Vapaus currently has on the world around us, we can make the right choices in our day-to-day operations to further improve this. There’s still room for improvement, but we’re on the right track!
